What is it?
Lip filler is a hydrophilic product, meaning that it draws moisture and water to your skin. When injected lip filler adds volume to your lips making them look softer and more youthful.

How do Lip Fillers work?
Hyaluronic acid provides volume to the treatment area, and it is a hydrophilic product, meaning it draws water into the skin. We have multiple different HA products we can use, depending on your goals. If you want to add a lot of volume, we’ll use a thicker, more structured product. If you want less volume, or are just looking to soften the lines around the mouth, we’ll use something much softer. Natural is always our top priority. Lip filler is not permanent. Depending on the individual, your filler will last between 6 and 12 months.
At AB Beautyt&Hair I only ever use hyaluronic acid filler, because it’s a naturally occurring sugar that creates a smooth, born-with-it look without the side effects associated with permanent fillers. That it gets naturally metabolized by the body overtime is a good thing – even if it’s annoying having to get the area re-treated. We also have a product called hyaluronidase which can dissolve hyaluronic acid immediately if there is a complication, or if you don’t like the result.
I can inject HA into the lips if you’ve lost volume over time, want to correct symmetry (i.e. one side of the lip is larger than the other, or the top and bottoms lips could be better proportioned), desire a more full look, or if you want to soften what’s commonly referred to as “smoker’s lines”. I can also inject HA at the side of the mouth, to turn up naturally downturned lips (which can sometimes give the impression of looking sad). Hyaluronic acid fillers are super versatile and with the right technique, deliver a great, natural look.
The Procedure
The procedure itself takes anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes and requires no recovery time. During the procedure your injector will apply a topical anaesthetic in order to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the treatment. They will then carefully mark the areas that are to be injected, and then proceed to inject the filler with a very fine needle. He or she may decide to use a cannula, it’s really up to the injector’s technique and the patient’s goals.
Are Lip Fillers for you?

Generally anyone who is looking to add volume to their lips or is looking to soften fine lines around the mouth is a good candidate for this treatment.
I use the Juvéderm, Stylage, Revolax. Which filler you receive is really dependent on your goals and the advice of your injector.
During your consultation you will need to be prepared to give your esthetician your full medical history (surgical procedures, chronic conditions, allergies etc.), which should include a list of any medications you are currently taking both prescription and over-the-counter, including any vitamins or supplements.
Some medications such as blood thinners can increase bleeding or bruising, so we often caution patients to discontinue use of these medications (including advil/ibuprofen) so that we keep bruising to a minimum.
Who should not get Lip Fillers?
Because the majority of dermal fillers used today contain hyaluronic acid, which is already naturally present in the body, allergic reactions are less common. That said, if you are allergic to any of the proteins used to make hyaluronic acid, you have severe allergic reactions, you are allergic to lidocaine (which is used in the topical anaesthetic), or you have a bleeding disorder or are generally quite prone to bleeding, you want to avoid getting lip fillers.
If you have an injury near the site of injection you will want to wait until that heals before scheduling your appointment. Anyone, who is pregnant or breastfeeding or trying to get pregnant should also wait until after to get lip fillers as the effects of dermal fillers on pregnancy and nursing are unknown.
When can I expect to see results?
Many patients see results immediately following treatment, but typically you will see full effects of the treatment within a 4-6 week.
Will I need more than one treatment?
Lip fillers can typically last anywhere between 6 and 12 months or longer. Because they get metabolized over time many patients prefer to come back halfway through in order to keep the look up. You’ll know when it’s time. Or you can always book a free consultation to get your injector’s opinion. Every patient is different and for some the fillers may last longer than for others. It’s also important to note that the location of where the filler is injected can also have an effect on its duration.
Are there any side effects?
There are a few known side effects of this treatment which will be discussed with you at your consultation.
Immediately following your treatment you might experience some bruising and swelling, bleeding from the site of injection, some redness and soreness in the area, and if you are prone to them, the possibility of cold sores or fever blisters returning.
